What HC / hE / HC4 Means
HC, hE, HC4 and 1 HC are Samsung’s heating error group: the dryer is getting too hot. Samsung’s steps are to clean the lint screen and the vent system, and on electric dryers with low-voltage signs to have an electrician check the supply. On a Samsung washer HC means the water heater and on a dishwasher HC is a heater over-temperature code, so this is the dryer’s own meaning.
Common Causes of HC / hE / HC4
- Exhaust vent clogged, crushed or too long
- Cycling thermostat or thermistor failed
- Heater relay stuck on
- Low supply voltage on an electric model
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Stop using the dryer until the vent is checked; too-hot air is the condition a lint fire needs. With the dryer switched off and cool, clean the lint screen and its housing, then with the dryer unplugged or its breaker off and pulled away from the wall, disconnect the duct and clear it and the outside hood. Run a cycle with the vent clear; if HC returns, the cycling thermostat, the heater relay or the thermistor is letting the heater run on, and that is a technician’s test with the power off and the cabinet open.

- A dryer that overheats with a clear vent has a control or heater problem that keeps the element live when it should not; running it while waiting is the wrong risk to take.
