Samsung sells a wider range hood line than most appliance makers, from under-cabinet units to wall-mount chimney hoods and Bespoke chimney hoods finished to match its ranges, all under the NK prefix. Some carry a sensor that raises the fan when it detects heat or steam, and some carry a camera that shows the cooktop on a phone. Underneath those features a hood is a blower motor and wheel, a speed control, grease filters, lights and, on ducted installations, a damper. That short list means most hood problems are narrow once the basics are ruled out, and the basics are the owner’s.
Filters, Every Month or Two
Once the hood is off and the cooktop below has cooled, release the grease filters, which on Samsung hoods are held by a spring latch or a tab, and take them down. Soak them in hot water with a grease-cutting dish soap, or run them through the dishwasher when the manual permits; most Samsung aluminum mesh filters are dishwasher-safe, and the manual is the authority. Dry them and refit them the way they came out. A filter clogged with grease is the commonest reason a hood stops clearing steam, and a filter that has been left long enough to drip is a fire concern above a burner as well as a cleaning one. While the filters are out, shine a torch up into the housing and look at the blower wheel; grease on the blades unbalances the wheel and produces the rattle owners describe as a failing motor.
Recirculating Hoods
A hood that is not ducted outside pushes the air through a charcoal filter and back into the kitchen. That filter cannot be washed and is replaced on the interval the manual gives, more often with heavy frying. A recirculating hood with fresh grease filters and stale charcoal moves plenty of air and removes no smell, which owners report as a hood that has stopped working.
Ducted Hoods and the Damper
A ducted hood that has grown weak with clean filters usually has a problem in the duct: a backdraft damper at the hood outlet or the wall cap stuck shut with grease, a flexible duct crushed above the cabinet, or a wall cap screen blocked by lint and leaves. The damper at the hood is reachable from inside the housing with the filters out and the hood off; the wall cap is reached from outside. A duct that is overlong or bends too often for the hood’s blower has always been weak and will stay so.
The Fan That Starts on Its Own
Several Samsung hoods run their fan automatically when the sensor above the cooktop detects rising heat or steam. On those models the fan coming on during cooking is the feature working, and it can usually be turned off in the settings if it is not wanted. A fan that starts with the cooktop cold and the kitchen quiet, or that refuses to stop after cooking has ended, points at the sensor or the control board it reports to, and that is a visit.
Lights
On hoods with replaceable bulbs, with the hood switched off and the light cool, fit the exact bulb type the manual lists; a halogen or LED of the wrong rating fails early or overheats the fitting. Many recent Samsung hoods use sealed LED modules that are replaced as a unit, which is a technician task. A correct bulb that still does not light points at the light switch or the control board, and a light that flickers points at the connection behind the fitting.
Motor and Control
A blower that hums without turning, runs on only one speed, or trips the breaker has a motor, a capacitor or a speed control problem. All of them sit inside the housing with the mains wiring and are tested with the hood isolated at the breaker.
