Of all the calls a Samsung refrigerator generates, this is the one that ends fastest. The fridge is warm, the freezer is thawing, the panel is lit, and the temperature display shows OF OF, or O FF, or OFF OFF, or a row of bars sliding from side to side. On Family Hub models every compartment in Fridge Manager reads OFF. Samsung’s support article on the subject calls this Cooling Off mode, also known as Demo mode or Shop mode, and describes exactly what it does: it disables the cooling systems, ice making and the water dispenser while leaving the display and lights running so the refrigerator can sit on a sales floor without frosting up. Samsung’s own words on that page are that service is not required.
How It Gets Switched On
Cooling Off mode is entered by holding a combination of panel buttons for several seconds. The combination is meant to be hard to hit by accident, and it still gets hit: while wiping the panel with a cloth, by a child leaning on the door, or by an installer who left the unit in the mode it was delivered in. A refrigerator that was cooling normally yesterday and shows OF OF today has almost always been through one of those. It also survives a power cut, so a fridge that comes back from an outage in Cooling Off mode was in that mode before the outage.
How to Turn It Off
The exit combination depends on the model and its panel, and Samsung’s article lists several. On many models it is the top two buttons on the left of the panel, held together for about eight seconds until the refrigerator chimes; on others it is the top-right pair; older cabinets use a named pair such as Power Freeze and Freezer, or Ice Maker with Auto Water Fill and Door Alarm. On Family Hub screens the setting lives in the Fridge Manager app under Fridge Settings, where Cooling Off can be deactivated with a tap. Samsung’s instruction, if the first combination does not work, is to consult the user manual for the exact buttons on your model, and that is the right order: manual first, guessing second. When the mode releases, the display returns to temperatures and you will hear the compressor start within a minute or two.
What About the Food?
How long the cabinet was in Cooling Off mode decides this, not how the food looks. Place one thermometer in the fresh-food section and another in the freezer. Perishable food that has been above 40°F for two hours or more should be discarded, following the FDA guidance for a refrigerator that has stopped cooling. Frozen food that still reads 40°F or below on a thermometer can be cooked or refrozen; food that reads higher goes out. Do not judge by whether something has refrozen or still looks and smells normal; the bacteria that matter do not change appearance.
When It Is Not Demo Mode
The same warm-fridge sign with normal numbers on the display, or with an error code rather than OF OF, is a different problem: a fan, a defrost problem, a compressor or the sealed system. And a display that will not leave Cooling Off mode after the manual’s combination has been tried carefully twice suggests the panel or the main control is not registering the buttons, which is a problem rather than a setting. In either case leave the code on the display rather than unplugging the unit to clear it, since Samsung asks owners not to reset a code before a technician has seen it.
