Samsung’s refrigerator code list has a group that all share one origin: something happened to the power. Samsung’s article defines 83E as abnormal current to the compressor being detected, 85E as a compressor under-voltage error where a brown-out may have occurred, 86E as a compressor over-voltage error where a power surge may have occurred, such as during a thunderstorm, and 88 88 as a communication problem, one that can occur if power is disrupted during boot-up. A separate 85C means low voltage was detected on the power source after a brief outage. They are worth knowing together because the owner action for the first four is identical.
The Sixty-Second Reset
For 83E, 85E, 86E and 88 88, Samsung’s instruction is to disconnect the refrigerator at the plug or its breaker for sixty seconds, then restore power, and to contact support if the code returns. For 85C the instruction is simpler: press and hold OK for three seconds to clear it. This is the one family of Samsung refrigerator codes for which Samsung itself recommends a power reset, so its general caution about not clearing codes before service does not apply here. If the code comes back after a single clean reset, stop resetting; a compressor code that returns is telling you about the inverter, the compressor or the supply, and the stored code is what the technician needs.
What a Returning Compressor Code Means
Samsung refrigerators use an inverter compressor driven by its own board, and that board watches the current the compressor draws. A returning 83E points at the compressor drawing more than it should, which can be the compressor itself, the inverter board, or a wiring problem between them. A returning 85E or 86E with normal house voltage means the inverter is reading something it does not like on its own supply. All of these are tested with the rear cover off and the unit isolated, and none of them is an owner job. If the compressor has failed, the repair involves the sealed system and refrigerant, and that is where owner advice stops: book a technician equipped for that work.
Check the House Supply Too
A refrigerator on a circuit shared with a heavy load, on a long extension lead, or on an outlet with a loose connection will report under-voltage codes that are not the refrigerator’s problem. Have the outlet and circuit checked by an electrician if the code appears mostly when other appliances start. A power-quality problem that repeatedly stresses the inverter is worth fixing before it becomes a compressor problem.
The Family Hub: 41, 41C and 42
Family Hub models have a screen with its own computer, and its codes are separate. Samsung lists 41 and 42, shown with the interior blue lights flashing, with the instruction to reboot the screen using the power switch inside the top right door, and to contact support if it continues. 41C on three-door French door Family Hub models comes with the instruction to check that the newest software is installed, then to tap OK on the first occurrence, then to contact support if it repeats. These are screen and software matters, not cooling problems: the refrigerator keeps cooling while the screen is rebooted, and a Family Hub that is stuck or restarting on its own does not put the food at risk on its own account.
PC ER and PC CH
One more code belongs with this group. PC ER or PC CH is a communication error between parts, which Samsung says can follow a power surge or improperly connected doors. The instruction is to unplug the refrigerator, disconnect and reconnect the door wire harness, and restore power. On a Samsung French door cabinet that harness runs through the top hinge into the door, and it is plugged in during installation; a door that was removed to get the fridge through a doorway and refitted without its harness fully seated produces this code.
